Fishermen

Louisbourg Seafoods has a great working relationship with the local fishermen.  Since 1984 we have been purchasing our products from boats all over Cape Breton Island.  Working together, we have built a mutual relationship of trust and respect.  Together we have collaborated on many new fisheries and new opportunities in an effort to stabilize the industry and our communities.

We consider ourselves very lucky to work with the progressive and modern-thinking fishermen in our area.  Total professionals and always innovating, our captains are willing to work with us to achieve better quality standards, ecosystem friendly techniques, and scientific excellence.  Some examples are:
  • Introduction of “From the Ocean to the Palate” quality campaign
  • Establishing an inshore whelk fishery involving Cape Breton University
  • Choosing to eliminate harvesting of smaller ‘canner’ lobsters (2009)
  • Choosing to reduce snow crab quotas on the advice of science for a more sustainable future fishery
