The fishing industry in Atlantic Canada now realizes the importance of science as it relates to fishery sustainability. Louisbourg Seafoods is 100% committed to fishing sustainably; as such, we have two biologists on staff and have a formal partnership with Cape Breton University who oversees our species development and fishery research projects. Louisbourg Seafoods fully supports and respects the conservation measures set forth by DFO and is active in the development of fishery management plans and industry feedback sessions with government. Through our partnerships with First Nations communities we have learned to adopt the philosophy of respecting the natural environment, a belief passed down through the historical culture of the Mi’kmaw people. With this in mind, Louisbourg Seafoods has often exceeded the challenge of sustainable fishery practices as we have opted out of fisheries we felt were unsustainable, set larger-than-minimum size standards, and refused to use gear we feel is not sustainable. |
